Here’s an interesting bit of trivia: Netfirms started as an advertisement-supported free hosting site in 1998. That experiment only lasted a year, and Netfirms moved to become a paid hosting company in 1999. Since Netfirms began it has grown from a small company started by two York University students to one of the largest hosting companies in the United States. It currently hosts more than 1.2 million websites. The company prides itself on positive customer experience and helping individuals and businesses achieve their goals online.

Netfirms is primarily focused on hosting websites for small and medium sized businesses, but has lately expanded into the consumer market. It now offers personal website hosting for as little as $2.49/month (provided you use the promo code at the beginning of this post!). They also offer domain registration, e-commerce solutions, and email exchange servers.

Netfirms’ data-center is located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Netfirm’s offices are headquartered in Markham, Ontario, Canada.

Netfirms User Reviews

Netfirms has been around for over 15 years, and it was initially a Canadian hosting company based in Ontario. When you read the user reviews, it seems that a lot of their customers were long term and very happy with the service, having hosted there for five years or quite often longer. However they were one of the over 60 smaller hosting companies acquired by the Endurance International Group a couple of years ago. Some users feel that since then their quality of hosting and support has declined, my personal feeling is that it would likely be comparable to all of the companies that EIG is running so moving to another budget host may not make a difference.

After reading through all of the reviews it seems that if you are looking to host a simple website then you will be just fine with Netfirms. Keep in mind that if you are running a website that uses a lot of bandwidth, will have high volumes of traffic, or has complicated needs in terms of script libraries or databases then most budget hosting will not be appropriate for you.

Netfirms Content Management Applications

Netfirms has their own proprietary website builder called Ready-to-go Websites that they promote quite heavily, according to their homepage you can use it to have a website online in minutes. It comes with several pre-designed website templates arranged according to category (Weddings, Blogs, Real Estate, Charity, Club, etc), and uses a drag and drop interface for website building. The pre-fab templates also come pre-populated with sample content. I haven’t had a chance to use it but apparently it is built on the engine and you can install any of the plugins. There is no fee for Netfirms users to use the Ready-to-Go Websites builder.

They do also mention that you can install 2.x on any of their hosting plans. I hope that they just haven’t updated the page and that is outdated information, as 4.0 just released and you should always use the latest version of open source software to make sure that you have the latest security patches.
